[Review] Curren$y - Weekend At Burnies

With Weekend at Burnie's, Spitta continues to give his supporters what they enjoy most about him, but also shows why some still think he's a new artist.
Curren$y has been buzzing for several years now, but hasn’t been able to take his career as high as he tends to be. With Weekend at Burnie’s, Spitta continues to give his supporters what they enjoy most about him, but also shows why some still think he’s a new artist.
Spitta’s most successful when he crafts melodic, laid back tracks (“What’s What,” “On G’s”), smooth enough to make fans lean without being under the influence. Monsta Beatz and Havoc & Magneto7 all craft the instrumentals to let Spitta work, albeit to mixed results. Still on the positive side, one of the album’s most outstanding cuts, “She Don’t Wanna Man,” showcases more depth to Spitta, something that is truly missing elsewhere. While tackling a serious subject matter (adultery) in a nonchalant manner, Curren$y flexes his versatility over one of the album’s most stellar beats. This leads a listener to feel more of this should have been provided.
There’s an inconsistency on Weekend at Burnie’s that keeps it from being fully successful. At some points, Curren$y shows why he was given the Spitta moniker, but other times, he shows how limited his flow and subject matter can be, slowly pushing through tracks with no real focus. Sometimes, he doesn’t even try to rhyme creatively. “What you wish they would played on the radio at least one time. It’s cool, though. We getting major paper on the underground. You thought it was them other fools, though it was us the whole time,” he says on “You See It” . When not faltering in this manner, Weekend is enjoyable but this type of work diminishes the album’s value.
“You know I speed, minus the bus and Keanu Reeves,” Curren$y says on the introductory “#Jetsgo" . The line is somewhat indicative of Spitta’s skill. While the line is average at best as it stands, it is also extremely dated. See, Curren$y is not devoid of all talent on the microphone as his longevity can attest, but he’s also not supremely gifted, as his nearly decade-long “new artist” tag can prove. To this point, Weekend does little to help this tag go away. Longtime fans will enjoy and support the album justly, but it will be understandably missed or ignored by many.

[Review] Eminem & Royce Da 5'9 - Bad Meets Evil

They may have gone through Hell separately but it's Hip-Hop Heaven when they're together.
Eminem and Royce da 5’9” have been through quite a bit over the last few years, but here on the other side of the deaths, beefs and arrests, each man has recently come back into his own. With Royce having signed to Eminem’s Shady Records as part of Slaughterhouse, it’s only right that they celebrate with Hell: The Sequel, a new EP from their group, Bad Meets Evil. Luckily, the intervening years haven’t slowed either man down and the EP finds both emcees fully in touch with what first attracted us to them.

On Eminem’s side in particular, Hell: The Sequel is reminiscent of The Old Shady and his battle-rap origins. While as long as many albums, the “side-project” nature of the work allows Eminem to break away from exploring every corner of his psyche and just have a good time getting high (“I’m On Everything,” with Mike Epps) and teaching kids about violence (“A Kiss”). There aren’t many left who doubt Eminem’s skills in general, but those who might be concerned that an EP means “throwaway verses” can rest easy.

There shouldn’t be any doubt about Royce’s abilities either, but trust that he more than carries his own weight in the partnership. He has just as many standout verses as Eminem, even on “The Reunion,” which initially seems built specifically for classic Slim Shady antics with its sing-song-y hook and horrifying lyrics. Royce stays sharp throughout in the spirit of friendly competition, carrying over to the rest of Slaughterhouse on the frantic closer, “Loud Noises” and never feels like the afterthought that other emcees might.

There some selections that feel a little out of place, particularly “Lighters,” a pop offering that should be familiar to anyone who’s heard any other rap song with a Bruno Mars hook. This kind of thing has a place on an Eminem album, but it seems like an unnecessary tactic for an EP that’s more a gift for the hardcore fans than a direct attempt at a platinum plaque.

There’s no telling what the future holds for two men whose pasts have been so complex, but hopefully their plans will continue to involve occasional collaboration. Eminem and Royce Da 5’9” are perfectly capable of standing on their own, but it’s clear that even after all these years, they inspire something special in each other. They may have gone through Hell separately but it's Hip-Hop Heaven when they’re together.

[Review] Sha Stimili - The Break Up Proposal (Mixtape)

The theme of the mixtape is relationships, and Sha uses his lyrical abilities to tell the story of a man who goes from being alone to jumping the broom.

Brooklyn emcee Sha Stimuli may not be the sickest lyricist the game has ever seen, but at times sheer charisma and honesty can outweigh vast amounts of precisely-spit, multi-syllabic bars. Though his LP My Soul to Keep gained notable buzz through the underground Hip Hop scene, he also earned notoriety for dropping numerous mixtapes online, and his latest effort, The Break Up Part 2: The Proposal is a continuation of his mixtape legacy.

With disregard to the verse Stimuli spits over the instrumental for D’Angelo’s R&B classic “How Does It Feel? (Untitled),” The Break Up Part 2: The Proposal is a concept tape consisting of all original beats and rhymes. Much like fellow Brooklyn rhyme spitter Torae’s Heart Failure EP from earlier this year, the theme of the mixtape is relationships, and Sha uses his lyrical abilities to tell the story of a man who goes from being alone to jumping the broom. Stimuli’s approach to the topic is that of unabashed honesty as he details his doubts about his own self control, his fictional lover’s ability to resist temptation, the benefits of marriage, and more.

Part 2 is sequenced in a manner that directly mimics the growth of a relationship in real life. Beginning with “Alone,” which is quite literally how Sha begins this journey, the tape quickly transitions into the passionate “So High,” (produced by J. Cardim), in which the two are exploring the physical aspect of their relationship. By the middle of the tape, listeners see the two characters pondering a life together in “Look At Us,” although both seem to have doubts about the long term. However, as fans can deduce from the title, it’s clear by “Something About You” that despite his doubts, Sha is ready to pop the question to the female love interest (who remains unnamed) in this story as he contemplates, look, as cynical as I’m sounding, there’s no way around it, I’m down with it, all of my boys are calling me clowning,  and I don’t even care, you my air, I thought this shit would drown me, but there’s something about you.”

With features on the mixtape being held down solely by singers, not rappers, Sha ensures that The Break Up Part 2: The Proposal is entirely his own story. Though this does make for a cohesive plot, the strict adherence to the theme of relationships and love may alienate some listeners who just aren’t in the mood to hear about the stresses of monogamy. But for those who are into that - and especially people who may be considering marriage in the near future - Stimuli’s latest mixtape is a solid, introspective effort at shedding light on how even the biggest players in the game can find themselves changing their ways thanks to some good old fashioned true love.

[News] 2Pac's Quad Studio Shooter Confesses

Jimmy Henchman associate, Dexter Isaac (left), admits to shooting Tupac Shakur at the Quad Studios in 1994
A man has admitted to shooting rap star Tupac Shakur in 1994 after allegedly being paid $2,500 dollars by James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond inside Manhattan’s Quad Studios in November of 1994. Dexter Isaac, a former friend of Rosemond, is an inmate currently serving life in prison for murder, robbery and other offenses.
Isaac came forward Wednesday (June 15th) with the information on the eve of what would be Tupac’s 40th birthday.
He confessed to his involvement in the November 30th, 1994 shooting of Tupac Shakur to AllHipHop.com, after Jimmy Henchman identified him in a statement, relating to Henchman’s indictment for dealing numerous kilos of cocaine.
“I want to apologize to his family [Tupac Shakur] and for the mistake I did for that sucker [Jimmy Henchman],” Dexter Isaac told AllHipHop.com from prison. “I am trying to clean it up to give [Tupac and Biggie's] mothers some closure.”
…Dexter Isaac told AllHipHop.com that he decided to confess to the robberies to prove Jimmy Henchman’s involvement, in addition to clearing his conscious for the shooting.

- All Hip Hop
Wow. Big, big revelation today. As we all know, 2Pac accused Biggie, Puff, and Bad Boy for setting him up at Quad Studios in 1994 and on the Makaveli song “Against All Odds”, 2Pac also promised payback at Jimmy Henchman. Looks like we all know now that Henchman was indeed involved. Plus, it’s now interesting to go re-read the LA Times article fiasco from a few years ago on this subject that named Henchman as the guy who set it up, but the article was retracted due to fabrication (MTV’s story here). Craziness. What do you all think??

[News] Big Sean Dropping A Mixtape Right Before He Drops His Album?

For Big Sean fans anxiously awaiting his June 28 debut, “Finally Famous,” the G.O.O.D. Music artist has officially announced to XXL plans of dropping a mixtape on the eve of the album’s release.

Although details are scant, Sean, who caught up with XXL backstage at the 2011 Summer Jam concert, told our cameras that a number of songs that won’t make the album, possibly including a Nas track he couldn’t get clearance for, will be released as a mixtape “strictly for the fans.”

And while an exact date wasn’t revealed, Big Sean says he already has a title in mind for the tape (although he wouldn’t announce it) and that it will probably include nine or 10 songs total.
